A quiet, electric revolution is underway in San Antonio’s urban core. One that doesn’t just aim to move people—it aims to retrain an entire city on how to move differently. With The Local, we’re introducing a completely new habit, one that’s transforming how San Antonians experience their districts.

Our latest pilot—an innovative loop route through Southtown—is unlike anything San Antonio has seen before. The service connects four beloved local businesses and stops at each one every 15 minutes, Friday through Sunday. These businesses aren’t just on the route—they’re the sponsors who helped make it happen. With this setup, riders can hop on, explore the area, and hop off, without ever needing to return to their car.

The participating businesses on the Southtown District Route are Bombay Bicycle Club at Hemisfar, Nixtamali Molino, The Jewel, and Luna Rosa Restaurant y Tapas.

It’s not just about convenience—it’s about changing the rhythm of how people explore their own city.

VIA’s Vision in Motion

Much of what inspired this Southtown route came from our partnership with VIA Metropolitan Transit. VIA has stepped into a true thought leadership role with its Keep SA Moving initiative—an effort to reimagine mobility across the city. As part of that vision, they championed the Little Runner Shuttle Service, connecting students and faculty between UTSA’s Downtown Campus and the new School of Data Science.

Rather than building a rigid, traditional shuttle system, VIA chose to innovate. They brought in The Local to operate the Little Runner—and what we discovered surprised even us.

People love riding it.

The Little Runners don’t feel like conventional public transportation. They feel more like tuk-tuks in Thailand—open, casual, and fun. Riders smiled. They talked to each other. They waved at pedestrians. It didn’t feel like commuting. It felt like moving through the city in a completely different way.

That experience was the spark. It showed us that this could be something bigger. So we expanded the model—independently—into Southtown.

A Glimpse of the Future

Some have compared our Southtown loop to a mini subway route—small vehicles, frequent, reliable stops, looping through a district. And while we didn’t borrow this idea from another city, we believe it’s preparing San Antonians for what’s ahead. The Green Line is coming. It’s funded, it’s planned, and it’s real. Our riders are getting a head start on what district-based, frequent transit will feel like.

In a city where public transportation has traditionally been irregular, the idea of “every 15 minutes” is radical. That level of reliability isn’t just about convenience—it’s about trust. Riders are learning that if they miss a vehicle, another one will be right behind it.

One rider called it “the excitement of consistency”—a phrase that stuck with us. The idea that people are actually excited because they can count on a ride showing up is both profound and telling. That excitement is exactly the energy we want to build on.

Cities across the country are leaning into micro-transit and micro-mobility. But here in San Antonio, we’re doing it our way. Safe. Clean. Fun. That’s our mantra. Add to that: approachable, hyper-local, easy to use.
