In an evening that blended elegance with innovation, supporters of the Mind Science Foundation recently gathered at The Argyle for their annual gala to champion the foundation’s flagship initiative, the BrainStorm Neuroscience Pitch Competition™, a program dedicated to advancing the study of human consciousness by awarding young scientists from around the world $100,000 in grants to pursue groundbreaking neuroscience research. This year’s gala was not only a celebration of the foundation’s rich history but also a call to action for our society’s continued investment in science.

Founded in 1958 by visionary philanthropist and entrepreneur Tom Slick, the Mind Science Foundation has been at the forefront of scientific inquiry into the mysteries of the human mind. What began as an ambitious endeavor to unlock human potential has evolved into a leading force in neuroscience, pushing the boundaries of what we know about consciousness, cognition, and mental health.

The foundation’s BrainStorm Neuroscience Pitch Competition™ initiative funds early-career neuroscientists, empowering them to conduct pioneering research while honing their ability to communicate complex ideas to the public. With a total of $100,000 in funding distributed annually, these researchers are pushing the frontiers of knowledge in areas such as:
- The impact of sleep on memory function in aging adults, particularly those affected by Alzheimer’s disease.
- The role of astrocytes—specialized brain cells—in learning and age-related cognitive decline.
- The potential of psilocybin to rewire the brain’s reward circuits as a treatment for opioid addiction.
By championing these studies, the Mind Science Foundation is helping to illuminate some of the greatest mysteries of the human brain. “We are breaking down barriers to scientific understanding and fostering a new generation of researchers who will change the way we think about the mind,” said Good.
“Scientific discovery should not exist in isolation,” said Dr. Ben Rein, the Foundation’s Chief Science Officer. “By equipping young researchers with both funding and communication skills, we ensure that breakthroughs in neuroscience become accessible and impactful.”

Under the leadership of President Meriam Good, along with a dedicated Board of Trustees, the foundation has embraced a modern approach to funding scientific discovery. “We are committed to supporting innovative research that not only advances our understanding of the mind but also has real-world implications for improving lives,” Good stated in her remarks to attendees.
Throughout the evening, guests were treated to an engaging program featuring compelling presentations from past BrainStorm winners, interactive exhibits on the latest research, and a keynote address that delved into the future of consciousness studies. The energy in the room was palpable, as attendees recognized the potential of the foundation’s work to transform neuroscience.

As the night drew to a close, the spirit of Tom Slick’s original vision was evident in the enthusiasm of those in attendance. The Mind Science Foundation is not just funding research—it is shaping the future of neuroscience, one discovery at a time.
For those inspired to be part of this journey, opportunities to contribute abound. Whether through philanthropic giving, advocacy, or participation in upcoming events, supporters of the Mind Science Foundation are united by a shared belief in the power of science to unlock the mind’s potential and enhance human well-being.
